agreed an' as ya said, the black/white no nuance conflatin' the state (i.e. "der stadt" at times...) with each sentient (scenty ant!) human bean... is done nowhere else.
Happy ta share the links! An' also, fer less fraught moments, Prof. Wisse is SO tee-riffic on literature too, a breath've fresh air we all need when surrounded by such "Tsuris" (George an' the general kind...) --Ya might enjoy this freebie course from the "other" Dr Ruth! (the one I prefer ;-)
Aw shucks Ilana, thanks an' ya deserve the honor! The world (whirled! it's'a spinnin') needs ta know ya can no more blame decent Jews in Israel fer the rotten schtoonks (that's puttin' it mildly) in power there than ya kin blame most Americans (now Ameri-Cons) fer the likes of the the dodderin' diapered dementia puppet we suffer here'bouts in the oval office (with Barack an' the Boys in the Backroom behind'im) -- an' yet folks DO. Most folks don't blame regular yankees fer Biden but they blame ALL OF US "Chews" fer everthin' Israel does an' has EVER done!--from the not-so-hot to the awful.... from Pfffizer ta "the border crisis" ta ingrown hairs whar they sit-- an' "zionist" is now the curse "woid" of the century--includin' on substack. I've no doubt the 'lections in Israel were just as monkey'd with as those here... none of us regular mensches should be blamed fer the sins or our non-elect-ids! (meantimes, yup, the key is findin' "community" if not the gefilte!) Meantimes, we sure need ya AND yer voice! I'll be lookin' out fer more...
ps tho' we here stateside are sorely lackin' now in voices speakin' up for us "joos" there's a tee-riffic writer named Karen Mezek, a preacher's daughter (!), whip-smart, who's worth lookin' at an' who writes lovely things in support of Jews and of Israel an' her time there (I subscribe)--an' great articles on many other subjects worth a listen!-- here's a link in case yer interested:
Whirled peas is all we need. And yes, I did notice that Israel is only and ever related to as it's "nation state" while every other citizen/issue/concern is permitted an identity all its own, separate from their gubment. Anything relegated to an all black/all white continuum must be approached with suspect.
Thanks for the links, Daisy, delighted to hear new voices and perspectives.
So grateful fer yer take on the canal n' gas situation--an' blessin's Ilana from (not so frum tho'!) a crackpotty lansman performer who writes in the vernacular (keeps the bots away!) an' who due ta mandates an' not bein' able ta work, an' with my kiddos equally banned from just'about everythin' they did, had ta pick up the fambly an' leave our home (Rotten Apple in this case / NY-Seize) an' move ta nowhereseville NewYawk where the grocery stores no longer have the "Pesach Aisle" -- so we are fish (gefilte perhaps..?.) outta warter--but as ya know, NewYawkShitty is a mess.... an' not so good fer us "chews" either (I have friends whose sons cannot even wear yarmulkes on the subway...gotta friend whose daughter's school had ta hire a private guard as there were threats--on school girls...)
I wuz so happy ta have discovered ya on CHD an' wondered where ya went--an' "walla" here ya be. Good nooz as we need sane voices ta counter the strident ones on both sides... as ya said, we had allies fer 'bout 15 minutes... Now all the bee-u-tee-ful people (even on substack) come out with index fingers pointin' (at us--"chews")
I go walkin' (virtually) after midnight (when the kids are sleepin') an' all I see is blood libel insanity/Adolph wuz right malarkey---mebbe worse than whut my granny sawr growin' up in the era of Father Coughlin? I'm just gobsmacked here'bouts--likely ya've seen if your way too unless yer innertubes are censored but the assumptions made 'bout the tunnels in Brooklyn, the internet virtual tattoos on every "chew" in our admittedly corrupt "gubbamint" blamin' everythin' (bad) on "us"--but no props fer you or Zev Zelenko or Shimon Yanovitz or Naomi Wolf or ANY of y'all good eggs who are riskin' yer lives speakin' up an' out.
So anywhoo... I've no idear how ta combat the hate an' sadly my smart an' wise bubbe is long dead (she, the natural-born prepper who always had canned tuna an' pineapple "just in case") but I'm lookin' ta learn more as facts matter--I'll do my best ta git out the word! 'Ain't no fan of Net'An'Yahoo (that's puttin' it mildly!) 'er the toxic ADL--but I fear fer Israel as we speak...
Meantimes, you've been one'a my heros fer some time--with grattytude!
Your vernacular made me smile though the topic altogether sober. I am genuinely honored to make your list and I sincerely hope you'll find both community and gefilte. I too am no fan of Bibi or the ADL, but I sure am fired up for the Joos. It is my hope we will clean up shop and be a body of vitality again. It is my hope each of our world communities does the same. More soon.
Writing as one who wrapped his metaphorical arms around you as you revealed the misanthropy during the Pfizer years as you quite aptly called it, so it is that I listened with respect to your new platform as you commented on what is taking place in your country. I am not a Jew but have affiliated myself in the past with Jewish organisations which have as their primary goal peace for all who live in Israel. As I listened to your explanation of events as you have reported them I was struck by a couple of things. Throughout all of your podcast you made no mention whatsoever of the people who have suffered the most and I am not talking about the Israeli people nor the events as they have unfolded since October 7th. This to me is telling. I learned that you are an American Jew who has lived in and been informed by Israel for the last 25 years, your current world view as an Israeli citizen so to speak. You are a Jew and you are defending your way of life in a world where there are many negative forces that are arrayed against you. How could you be otherwise? Here's the rub though. What I can only describe as a willful blindness means that throughout that 20 odd minute podcast you were unable to speak the the name of those people who have been, to the majority of human rights activists in the world anyway, living under an apartheid system controlled completely by an occupying force for the best part of 75 years. That occupying force is the State of Israel and the people under that control in that rapidly diminishing country are the Palestinians. The Palestinians. I think it is worth saying this phrase a number of times. The Palestinians. They exist. They are been oppressed, horrifically, by YOUR government, and for 25 years you have been OK with that. The International Court of Justice has just ruled in favour of the South Frican legal team which has argued that genocide is being committed by the State of Israel in Gaza and against those Palestinians dying there in their droves, that there is, quote, unquote, " a massive, disproportionate, indiscriminate use of force in Gaza by Israel and there is a plausible case for genocide. So this is the 15-2 / 16-1 judgement of the judges of the International Court of Justice. The general consensus of Jewish opinion to that ruling is even more telling. " The ICJ is anti-semitic" I'm not sure if you or your readers understand how serious this is. The ruling from the ICJ is clear : "Israel must cease and desist from all acts of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza." The State of Israel shall ensure with immediate effect that its military does not commit any acts described in Point 1, above, the " cease and desist" on all acts of genocide. Under the terms of the United Nations Charter the order goes to the Security Council for enforcement. At present it appears that the Biden administration will NOT veto any enforcement at all. So this might not be the end of the matter. It could then be turned over to the UN General Assembly under the Uniting for Peace Resolution, under which makes proviso for dramatic consequences for Israel. Firstly, the General Assembly could suspend Israel from participation in its activities just as they did, for example, to the criminal apartheid regime in pre- Mandela South Africa. Secondly, the General Assembly, pursuant to its powers under Atricle 22 of the UN Charter can set up an International Criminal Tribunal for Israel. This sets the course for the prosecution of the highest military and civilian officials in Israel. Thirdly, the General Assembly can recommend UN member states adopt sanctions against Israel. Next, the General Assembly can recommend that all UN member states sever diplomatic relations with Israel. Finally, under the Uniting for Peace Resolution ( the same resolution which has held Nth. Korea under sanctions for 70 years) the General Assembly can admit Palestine as a full- fledged UN member state. One other point to consider : "An occupying power [ Israel in Gaza] has no 'right' to self-defence in the area in which it is occupying." Now I realise that this is all legalistic and academic and mmany may have stopped reading this by now, but my point is this,Ilana, if we are to have a system of justice and the rule of law then all must abide by it or we may as well go back to the jungle. Some say we are there already.
Thomas, after a single twenty minute introduction you draw a great number of assumptions which you cannot possibly arrive to with any precision.
I, as the Jew you mentioned, intend to speak from a perspective that has not before been represented, or at least not widely heard or understood. For all the incessant discussion *about* the Jews, the absence of understanding anything meaningful about us is sobering. The scale of inaccuracy in your comments offer a crystal clear example, not that we needed it here too, of why this podcast is vital.
